Rosecrans's command is not specifically stated in the “
Official Records.”
According to the return for September 30th, 1862, his “aggregate present for duty” was 23,077 (Vol.
XVII., Pt. II., p. 246). Probably not less than twenty thousand participated in the battle.

General Rosecrans estimates the Confederate strength at nearly forty thousand and says that was almost double his own numbers.
