Bryce, James, 1838-

Historian; born in Belfast, Ireland. May 10, 1838; was graduated at Oxford University in 1862; practised law in London till 1882; and was Professor of Civil Law in Oxford in 1870-93. He was first elected to the British Parliament as a Liberal in 1880. He has distinguished himself alike in politics and historical literature, and is best known in the United States for his work on The American commonwealth.
