Corcoran, William Wilson 1798-1888

Philanthropist; born in Georgetown, D. C., Dec. 27, 1798; educated at Georgetown College; became a banker in Washington in 1837; and retired in 1854. He was the founder of the Corcoran Art Gallery, in Washington, D. C., to which he gave a large endowment. His contributions to public and private charities are said to have aggregated more than $5,000,000. He died in Washington, D. C., Feb. 24, 1888.
