Gibbs, Alfred 1823-

Military officer; born in Sunswick, Long Island, N. Y., April 23, 1823; graduated at West Point in 1846: served under Scott in Mexico, and afterwards against the Indians; and when the Civil War broke out he was in Texas. He was made prisoner, and when exchanged in 1862 he was made colonel of the 130th New York Volunteers, and served under Sheridan, in the latter part of the war, in command of a cavalry brigade. He was active in the Army of the Potomac at all times, and was a thoroughly trustworthy officer. In March, 1865, he was brevetted major-general of volunteers. He was mustered out of the service Feb. 1, 1860; was commissioned major of the 7th Cavalry on July 28 following; and served in Kansas till his death, in Fort Leavenworth, Dec. 26, 1868.
