Gibson, Tobias 1771-1804

Clergyman; born in Liberty, S. C., Nov. 10, 1771; became a minister of the Methodist Church in 1792; went as a missionary to Natchez in 1800;. travelled alone through the forests for 600 miles to the Cumberland River; sailed 800 miles in a canoe to the Ohio River; and then went down the Mississippi. He is noted chiefly for the introduction of Methodism in the Southwest. He died in Natchez, Tenn., April 10, 1804.
