Jenkins, Thornton Alexander 1811-1893

Naval officer; born in Orange county, Va., Dec. 11, 1811; appointed midshipman in 1828; commissioned lieutenant in 1839; promoted captain in 1862; and rear-admiral in 1870. In 1834 to 1860 he was employed on the coast survey, and in the lighthouse board. He was fleet captain, and commanded the Hartford when Farragut passed Forts Jackson and St. Philip below New Orleans, April 24, 1862; commanded the Richmond when Farragut captured Mobile in 1864. He died in Washington, D. C., Aug. 9, 1893.
