Kettle Creek, battle of

Nearly 800 North and South Carolina Tories, led by Colonel Boyd, started to join the British at Augusta, in February, 1779, desolating the upper country of the latter State on the way. When within two days march of Augusta they were attacked (Feb. 14), at Kettle Creek, by Col. Andrew Pickens, with the militia of Ninety-Six, and, after a sharp fight, were defeated. Boyd and seventy of his men were killed, and seventy-five were made prisoners. Pickens lost thirty-eight men.
