McClure, Sir Robert John Le Mesurier 1807-1873

Arctic explorer; born in Wexford, Ireland, Jan. 28, 1807. In 1850-54 he explored the polar seas north of America in the ship Investigator, and was the first to discover the long-sought northwest ocean passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific waters. For this discovery he was knighted and presented with $20,000. He died in London. England, Oct. 14, 1873.
