Monroe, Elizabeth Kortwright 1768-1830

Wife of President James Monroe; born in New York City in 1768; married Monroe in 1786; accompanied her husband abroad in 1794 and 1803. She was instrumental in obtaining the release of Madame Lafayette during the French Revolution. She died in Loudon county, Va., in 1830.
