Murray, James 1712-1794

Governor of Canada; born in Scotland, about 1712; fourth son of Lord Elibank; entered the British army in 1751, and served with Wolfe in Europe and America, being brigadier-general in the expedition against Louisburg in 1758. Junior brigadier-general at the capture of Quebec (of which city he was made military governor), he held it against great odds when assailed by De Levi. He was made major-general in 1762, and the next year was again governor of Quebec. He was governor of Minorca in 1778; made a gallant but unsuccessful defence of the fortress there in 1781; and died in Sussex, England, June 8, 1794.
