Shearman, Thomas Gaskell 1834-

Lawyer; born in Birmingham, England, Nov. 25, 1834; was brought to New York by his parents in 1843; received a private education; was admitted to the bar in 1859. He was one of the counsel for Henry Ward Beecher in the Beecher-Tilton trial; became conspicuous as a free-trade advocate. He was the author of Natural taxation; Crooked taxation; Does protection protect? the single tax; Distribution of wealth; Who own the United States? etc, He died in Brooklyn, N. Y., Sept. 29, 1900.
