Slemmer, Adam J. 1828-

military officer; born in Montgomery county, Pa., in 1828; graduated at West Point in 1850; was promoted for gallant conduct in the Seminole War; was for a while assistant Professor of Ethics and Mathematics at West Point, and was in command of a small garrison at Fort McRae, near Pensacola, when the Civil War broke out. He took his men and supplies to stronger Fort Pickens, and held it against the Confederates until relieved by Colonel Brown (see Pickens, Fort). He was made brigadier-general of volunteers in 1862; was severely wounded in the battle of Stone River, and was disabled from further active service. In March, 1865, he was brevetted brigadiergeneral, United States army, and was afterwards commandant at Fort Laramie, Kan., where he died, Oct. 7, 1868.
