Vincennes

A city and county seat of Knox county, Ind., on the Wabash River, 58 miles south of Terre Haute. A French mission was established here in 1702, and soon afterwards a fort. With the surrender of Canada, Vincennes passed into the possession of the British, and on Feb. 26, 1779, it was captured from them by General Clark. On the organization of the Territory of Indiana in 1800 the town became the seat of government, and remained so till 1814, when a change was made to Corydon. On Sept. 6, 1814, it was incorporated as a borough, and on Feb. 13, 1856, was chartered as a city. See Clark, George Rogers.
