Williamson, William Durkee 1779-1846

Historian; born in Canterbury, Conn., July 31, 1779; settled in Amherst, Mass.; graduated at Brown College in 1804; studied law and began practice in Bangor, Me.; and held a seat in the Massachusetts Senate in 1816-20. In the latter year, when Maine separated from Massachusetts, he was made president of the first Maine Senate, and when Gov. William King resigned became acting governor. He was a member of Congress in 1821-23; probate judge of Hancock county in 1824-40; and the author of History of the State of Maine, from its first discovery to the Separation (2 volumes). He died in Bangor, Me., May 27, 1846.
