II. list and military history of Massachusetts: General officers.

note. This list of general officers, by brevet or otherwise, includes (I) those born in Massachusetts (2) those appointed from Massachusetts into the regular army (3) those serving previously in Massachusetts volunteer regiments. In many cases the brevets were conferred at the very close or even after the close of the civil war, but they were, in all cases here included, based in part at least on services during the war itself. Details in regard to these brevets will be found in a separate table.

Born at Lowell, Mass., Jan. 21, 1842. Private “New England Guards,” 4th Infantry, M. V. M., in service of the U. S., May, 1861. Mustered out, June, 1861. Second Lieutenant, 20th Mass. Infantry, July 10, 1861. Left the state with his regiment in Sept. for the Potomac River; at the battle of Ball's Bluff, Va.; in camp at Poolesville, Md., winter of 1861-62. First Lieutenant, Nov. 8, 1861. Captain, Aug. 29, 1862. Doing guard duty on the Potomac River opposite Leesburg, Va., till Feb., 1862; in the valley of the Shenandoah, Mar.; present at the siege of Yorktown, battles of West Point and Fair Oaks, where he received the sword of General [167] Pettigrew, taken prisoner by his company. Engaged in the Seven Days battle; wounded in the arm at Glendale, June 30; at Malvern Hill; on furlough for a few weeks. Rejoined his regiment on the James River. In Pope's campaign; present at the battle of Chantilly. Started on the Maryland campaign; was taken ill at Frederick, Md. On sick leave until the last of Nov. Rejoined his regiment at Warrenton, Va.; engaged in the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. Major, 20th Mass. Infantry, May 1, 1863. In command of his regiment till May 6, 1864. Present at the battles of Bristoe Station, Va., Mine Run and Wilderness. Killed at the battle of the Wilderness, Va., May 6, 1864. Brevet Lieut. Stationed at Fort Monroe, Va. Brevet Major, May 27, 1862. Brevet Lieut. Colonel, Sept. 17, 1862. Lieut. Colonel, Assistant Insp. General, assigned, Nov. 17, 1862, to Oct. 6, 1864. Colonel, 3d Mass. Adams, Charles Francis, Jr.

Born at Boston, Mass., May 27, 1835. First Lieutenant, 1st Mass. Cavalry, Dec. 19, 1861. Accompanied regiment to Port Royal, S. C.; remained until Aug., 1862. Took part in the James Island advance on Charleston; ordered to Virginia in Aug.; took active part in Antietam, Md., campaign, during which he was Adjutant of regiment. Captain, Oct. 30, 1862. Served constantly with the Army of the Potomac throughout the year 1863, in all its actions and skirmishes; detailed for service in command of squadron of cavalry at army headquarters, Apr., 1864. Lieut. Colonel, 5th Mass. Cavalry, July 15, 1864. Mustered, Sept. 8, 1864. Joined regiment at Point Lookout, Md. Colonel, Feb. 15, 1865; mustered, Mar. 14, 1865.
