--The New Mexican mail, with dates to the 28th ult., has arrived.
Capt. Geo. McLane
, of the mounted rifles, was killed by the Navajo Indians
on the 13th of October.
He was out on a scout with his company, and when within about twenty-five miles of Fort Defiance
, a party of Indians were overtaken.
In the charge upon them, Capt. McLane
killed four Indians with his pistols.
When the charge was made and the word to rally given, the Captain
became separated from his men and was seen to fall from his horse.
His foot became entangled in his stirrup, and his horse being frightened, ran off, dragging him a considerable distance before he was stopped.--When his men came up, they found that he was dead.
He had three shots in him, which must have produced instant death.
