--The "Irish News," a very respectable organ of the Irish population in New York, says:

‘ "There is a talk of an army of 60,000 men, to be furnished by New York and others of the border free States, and commanded by Gen. Scott, for the purpose of putting down South Carolina and bringing the rest of the Southern States to order! God protect society from such a stroke of strategy. The united North could not put down the South. But they who would put down the South are only a fanatical fragment of the North; and it is the North itself which would probably rue the rising of such an armament. The lovers of a free fight all round will wish for such a state of things. But we suspect they will not see it. Gen. Scott is an impulsive man; but he is not crazy. He would not dare to advise such an outburst in the country, and could no more control it than a child."
