Horrible Affair
--
A Son Murders his Mother.A young man named Orondough, was committed to the jail of
Amherst county, Va., on Monday last, charged with the murder of his mother, on the 7th inst. The parties lived on the
Blue Ridge mountain, and the mother having been missed since the 7th inst., suspicions were aroused.
The Lynchburg Republican says:
‘
A large number of persons assembled together, and proceeding to the house, demanded to know of the young man where she was?
His reply was ‘"that he did not know, she might be in hell! "’ They then told him to go with them in a search which they proposed to make.
This he at first declined, but after much threatening consented to go, and after a long search the mother was found behind an old log, some half mile distant from the house, dead.
Her neck was broken, and her body, in different places, exhibited evidence that she had been beaten to death with some blunt instrument.
The party immediately arrested young Orondough, and took him before a magistrate, who fully committed him for trial.--Leading to the spot where she was found, were the tracks of a man, which, upon being measured, were found to correspond exactly with the size of the foot of young Orondough, and although the evidence is purely circumstantial, yet, taken in connection with the threats he had been heard to make against the life of his unfortunate victim, there seems to be but little doubt that the guilt of the parricide rests upon his head.
He manifests, we learn, the most perfect indifference — refuses to answer any questions, or to account in any way for the strong circumstances which seem to be arrayed in an unbroken chain against him.
