Bishop McGill on the National Troubles. We find the following reference to our national affairs in a pastoral letter from Bishop McGill, of Richmond, Va.: ‘ The fortunes and fate of our beloved country are now trembling in the scales, and we know not what ruins and disasters may be impending. Our chief hope is in the merciful providence of God. Let us pray to Him, who holdeth in His hands the fate of nations, to control events so as to conduce to His own greater honor and glory and to the greater good of his people. The Redeemer came to bring peace on earth to men of good will. Let us pray for union and peace. We appoint the Collect Pro Pace to be read by the Reverend Clergy at the Mass until Holy Week, and we exhort them to unite with their flocks in prayers to God for the welfare of the Republic. ’
