Building in Northern cities.

--In Boston the buildings put up during the year 1860 was 984, and their cost $5,978,161. This was less by four millions of dollars than the year previous, but the large expenditure of that year was owing to several blocks of buildings of great magnitude and cost. The number and cost of the buildings last year will show, however, a very handsome addition so the city of Boston. Of these buildings, the Journal says, the appearance of an enlarged, liberal and cultivated taste in the style of modern structures is strikingly apparent. In New York city the great depression in rents, owing to the stagnation in business, is putting a check to building operations, and the Tribune says there will probably be a less number of buildings this year than fourteen or fifteen years ago. Notwithstanding this, the additions during the last year have been large, and the buildings of a costly character, adding greatly to the embellishment of the city.
