Drowned.
--
Geo. W. Durst, who served in the
Palmetto Regiment through the
Mexican war, was drowned in the canal, near
Augusta, Ga., on the 4th ult., while repairing a dam. The deceased acted well his part as a soldier in all the distinguished conflicts in which his regiment was engaged in
Mexico, and received on his return home the medal awarded for gallantry by his generous State.
At the
Garita de Belin, in the heat of the combat, and whilst the men of
Drum's Battery were being annihilated by the enemy, he several times constituted one of a number that volunteered from the South Carolina Regiment to aid that gallant officer in manning his gun; and when the last man of the
Battery, and the heroic
Captain himself had fallen, and several of the Palmettos besides,
Durst was still standing at the gun.
