Manassas Junction. May 29, 1861.
Thinking you would like a few items from our camp at Manassas, from which place I returned on yesterday, after a stay of only twenty-four hours, I take my seat for that purpose.
First, as to the condition of our forces;--they are evidently well provided for in the way of inner comfort, as I can truly youth for. I dined at one of the tents from good roast beet, sweet bacon, rice, &c. Many are yet unprovided with tents, and straw is also wanted.
The appearance and spirit of the troops is all that could be desired.
Persons are daily arriving from Alabama and Florida.
They report all quiet there.
One of our scouts was shot the day before I got to camp, causing a slight would on the shoulder from a Minnie ball.
His companion come how got dismounted; his coming to camp caused the report of his capture or death.
At is said that he concealed himself in an old fox den, and subsequently gave the enemy the slip.
I fear too much latitude is given in your city in the way of passports.
I hear they are easily gotten by any one.
A man was teen in Alexandria a day or two since in close conference with officers of the Yankee forces for hours, who had passed our lines with a permit from the Governor.
Spies are as thick as hops, I fear.
