Yorktown, July 9, 1861.

Editors Dispatch: Gentlemen — I see in your paper of the 8th inst. a letter from your correspondent at ‘"Camp Page, near Williamsburg,"’ giving an account of the skirmish near Newport News, in which the lamented and gallant Col. Dreux was killed, which states that he was ‘"accompanied by a detachment of the Nottoway Cavalry,"’ and in some remarks just preceding the letter, headed ‘"The Skirmish near Newport News,"’ it is said that ‘"the sudden dash of their horses startled the horses of the Howitzers"’ I beg to say that the Nottoway Cavalry bore no part whatever in the skirmish, being stationed at Yorktown on the day it took place.

Your kindness in giving this note an insertion in your paper, so as to correct those misstatements, which are doubtless unintentional, will much oblige,
