Run himself to death.
--A few days ago a man named
William Shuler, escaped from the guard-house, in
Winchester, Va., where he was confined for refusing to perform militia duty, and returned to the neighborhood in which he resided, on
Back Creek, in this county.
On Monday last two men were detailed from
Capt. R. Smith's company, quartered in
Winchester, to visit the company's district and notify all subject to militia duty to proceed to join their company without delay.
As the two men were going through a corn-field, with their guns on their shoulders, they discovered three men emerge from a grapevine thicket and run at the top of their speed.
On approaching the thicket they discovered a coat, a haversack with pies in it, and a canteen, which the fugitives had left behind.
Proceeding on in the direction which the men ran, they met some individuals who stated that
Shuler suddenly dropped dead whilst running, as his companions had informed some females whose house they passed in their continued flight.
He had run about three-fourths of a mile, when he fell from exhaustion or the rupture of a blood vessel.
