New publications.
Abstruction for Heavy Artillery.--Prepared by a board of officers for the use of the Army of the United States.
Since the beginning of the war no firm in the
South has shown more enterprise and activity than
Messrs. West &
Johnston, of this city.
They have brought out from time to time works of great value, demanded by the exigencies of the times and not withstanding all difficulties, have published books that redect credit upon them.
At this time there is great demand for books of military instruction, and as the stock on hand was completely exhausted long ago, it became necessary to have reprints for the use of the army.
Messrs. West &
Johnston attempted the task and have issued to the public several valuable and instructive books upon tactics and the art of war. Among the best of these is the ‘"Instruction for Heavy Artillery,"’ prepared by a board of Army Officers, pursuant to orders from the
General-in-Chief of the United States Army, and into which service it was adopted.
This system is, probably, the most complete of any in use and contains the essential facts and improvements of all modern writers upon artillery.
It is a complete system of instruction for Siege, Garrison Seacoast and Mountain Artillery.
This edition of the work is gotten up in elegant style, with the original plates executed very handsomely; is printed on white paper, in clear type, and contains upward of two hundred and seventy pages.
It is a book of great value in officers and soldiers who wish to perfect themselves in the Artillery service.

Instructions for Field Artillery--Extracted from
Gilham's Mannal for Volunteers and Militia."’
This is a small work containing seventy-eight pages and is intended to give, in a convenient form that portion of
Gilham's tactics relating to Light Artillery practice.
It is especially adapted to the wants of artillerists, being small and easily carried in the pocket or knapsack.
It goes over the whole ground of artillery drill, commencing with the school of the piece and ending with instructions for manœuvring a battery in the field.

Nepoleon's Marints of War."’
Messrs. West &
Johnston have re-issued this little volume as a publication timely for the occasion.
The maxims are illustrated by examples and instances drawn from the campaigns of
Gustavus Adolphus,
Turenne,
Frederick and
Napoleon.
As the publishers say in their preface, ‘ "a collection of maxims which directed the military operations of the greatest captain of modern times, cannot fall to prove of great use to such young officers as really desire a knowledge of the art of war."’ It is a neat little volume, well printed and well bound, and is both instructive and interesting.
It must have a rapid sale.

War Songs of the South.--Edited by 'Bohemian,' Correspondent of the Richmond
Dispatch."’
This book of patriotic lyrics, although issued but a few days since, has met with general favor with the public and is being sold rapidly.
It is a work of genius and patriotism, and should be in the hands of every Southern soldier.
A book for the camp and for the firends, containing nearly one hundred lyrics and songs called out by the war, it cannot fail to challenge the admiration of all who read it.

A New Map of Virginia."’
The same publishers also have issued a new map of
Virginia, containing all the roads, telegraph lines and railroads, and showing very clearly the present seat of war. This is one of the best maps issued in the
South.
All the above mentioned publications are now ready, and are offered to the public.
