The assassination of Gen. W. R. Caswell.

The telegraph has noticed the assassination of Gen. W. R. Caswell, near Knoxville, Tenn. He was found about half a mile from his house with his throat cut and his body otherwise mangled by the knives of assassins. His servants said they saw him struggling with some men in the road, but before they could reach him he was killed. A cavalry party had been sent out to scout for the murderers. Gen. Caswell was about 50 years of ago and served with great distinction in the Mexican war. He was among the first citizens of Knoxville to embrace the cause of the Confederacy, and was appointed Brigadier-General in the Tennessee State service, and commanded the forces until they were turned over to the Confederate Government, when he retired to private life.
