Congressional election in Virginia.

At the general election in May next the people of Virginia will be called upon to select sixteen members to represent them in the lower House of the next Congress. We present a list of the candidates in the several districts, so far as we have been able to obtain them. There may be other candidates of whom we have not learned, and others may announce themselves previous to the day of election:

  1. 1st District.--M. R. H. Garnett present member, and again a candidate; opposed by Lieutenant Governor R. L. Montague.
  2. 2d District--John R Chambliss, present member, declines a re-election. Robert H. Whitfield and Col. Wm. A. Parham are announced as candidates.
  3. 3d District--James Lyons, present member, and again a candidate. No opposition yet announced.
  4. 4th District--Charles F. Collier, present member, No opposition announced.
  5. 5th District.--Thomas S. Bocock, present member. No opposition announced.
  6. 6th District--John Goode, Jr, present member, and again a candidate. No opposition announced.
  7. 7th District.--James P. Holcombe, present member, it is understood, will not be a candidates for re-election. No announcements made that we are aware of.
  8. 8th District--Daniel C. D. Jarnette, present member, and a candidate for re-election. Opposed by James Barbour.
  9. 9th District.--Col. Wm. Smith present member. Now a candidate for Governor Col. David Function is spoken of ancestor.
  10. 10th District.--Alexander E. Boteler, present member, and a candidate for re-election. Opposed by Col. F. W. M. Holiday.
  11. 11th District.--John B. Baldwin, present member, and a candidate for re-election. No opposition.
  12. 12th District.--Waller R Staples, present member, understood to be again a candidate. No opposition.
  13. 13th District.--Walter Preston present member, and again a candidate. Opposed by Fayette McMullan.
  14. 14th District.--Capt. Miller, present representative, is a candidate. We have heard of no opposition. This is the Kanawha District.
  15. 15th District.--Robert Johnson, present members. Represents the Williamsburg District. Is again a candidate, without opposition, as far as we are informed.
  16. 16th District--Charles W. Russell, present member; understood to be a candidate for re-election; without opposition. This is the Wheeling District.
