A Startling Rumor from the Peninsula.
Two gentlemen arrived in this city from
Gloucester county yesterday, who state that a night or two since a tremendous report of an explosion was heard throughout the county, shaking the very earth and shattering the glass in the windows.
They were informed by a Yankee deserter whom they met the following day that a fire had broken out in the bake-house used by the
Yankees in
Yorktown, which communicated itself to some shells not far distant, and from thence to the magazine, which exploded with a terrific crash, nearly annihilating a couple of negro regiments.
The deserter estimated the number of killed and wounded by this untimely accident at several hundred.
