The currency question.

This question, upon which are hinged so many vital interests, is now fairly before Congress, the special committee to whom the question was referred in the House of Representatives having submitted their report. As this report was received and read in secret session, of course very little is known to the public of its provisions. This much we have learned, however, that the scheme of the committee is embraced in two separate bills — the one providing for the final disposition of the existing currency, and the other proposing a scheme of taxation upon which to base the new system to be inaugurated.

As stated, we have little knowledge of the provisions of either of these bills, but have some indirect information that the first contemplates a rapid and complete absorption of the present circulation by a judicious system of funding. Of the latter, we may confidently predict that the taxes will be piled on heavily enough to give satisfaction to the most liberal and patriotic supporter of the Government.
