The Legislature.
Senate.--Shortly after the meeting of the Senate yesterday it resolved itself into secret session, in which condition it remained until 11 o'clock P. M.
The Senate's resolution in regard to the liability of the Confederate Government for slaves lost in the public service, was reported back with a substitute therefore from the
House Tabled.
The bill to incorporate the
Richmond Insurance Company was reported with amendments.
A bill of the
House, with amendments, was reported, in relation to the sale of certain slaves in the penitentiary.
Adjourned.
House.--After prayer by
the Rev. Dr. Petigrew, the bill for indemnifying the owners if tobacco destroyed by fire at the
Public Warehouse, with the refusal of the Senate to recede from their amendment, was taken up, when, on motion a committee of conference was ordered.
A committee reported a bill for disbanding the 179th regiment militia of the line, and providing for the more efficient organization of the 19th regiment of the line, and the 1st regiment of the second class militia was offered--(which is understood as a sort of amendment to the militia bill of the Senate, inasmuch as the Senate's bill exempts the 179th regiment, and this bill disbands that body!
A lengthy discussion ensued, in which almost every member on the floor of the
House participated.
A bill authorizing and directing the payment of the "Dixie Boys," an independent company of scouts and rangers operating in
Virginia, was presented.
