The Legislature.
The following bills were passed in the
Senate yesterday:
An act to amend the charter of the city of
Petersburg.
An act to authorize the Common Council of
Danville to acquire land in
Pittsylvania county for certain public uses.
A bill to provide for the punishment of negro convicts in certain cases.
A bill to increase the allowance to sheriffs and sergeants for certain services rendered to the public.
A bill to amend the 8d section of an act for the relief of indigent soldiers and sailors, passed October 21st, 1863.
A bill to amend the 54th section of chapter 61 of the Code of
Virginia, edition of 1860, in relation to the transfer of turnpikes to counties in which they lie.
A bill amending the 2d section of an act amending the charter of the
Virginia Fire and Marine Insurance Company, passed Jan. 4th, 1858.
A bill entitled an act to incorporate the
Stonewall Manufacturing Company, with amendments.
The House of Delegates having refused to recede from their amendment to the bill for the relief of soldiers' families, after the same had been recommended by the conference committee upon the subject, returned the bill to the Senate and asked for the appointment of a new committee.

A resolution of inquiry was adopted to ascertain what legislation is necessary in consequence of the recent acts of Congress on the currency question.
And a resolution for prohibiting the cultivation of tobacco during the present war.
Also, a resolution for prohibiting theatrical performances and public shows during the war.
And one for reporting a bill recommending to the
Governor such persons for exemption as may be necessary to carrying on the
State Government and for other purposes.
A joint resolution in regard to the impressment of slaves to work on fortifications was presented.

In the
House, Mr. Haymond, of
Marion, introduced a bill to amend the bill in relation to the fees of jailors.
The militia bill coming up as the order of the day, was, on motion of
Mr. Staples, laid upon the table by a vote of ayes 76, noes 36.
Mr. Staples submitted a resolution directing the Military Committee to inquire and report what officers of the
Government the
Governor shall certify to as necessary to be exempt in order that the government of the
State may not be interrupted.

The bill to provide for the completion and equipment of the
Covington and Ohio Railroad was taken up and its discussion consumed the entire session,
Messrs. Burwell,
Wilson, of
Isle of Wight,
Dean,
Anderson, and others, supporting the bill.
