The soldiers giving to the poor of the City.
We know of nothing which has occurred during this war, which is more inexpressibly touching than the noble generosity of our soldiers, acknowledged in the card below, by the Chairman of the Christian Association. Such deeds as these will be recorded on a page as bright as that on which are inscribed the battles in which they have shed their blood, that their country might live: Depot Army Committee Y M C A., Richmond, June 14, 1864.
The Army Committee acknowledge with pleasure the receipt of one day's rations, contributed by the gallant soldiers of Gen Lee's army, for the benefit of the poor of this city, as follows:

From the "Stonewall" Brigade, composed of the 2d, 4th, 5th, 27th and 33d Virginia regiments.
Gen Evans, in his letter accompanying the contribution from his brigade, says: ‘
"The ability of our country to sustain its army in the field most abundantly is fully exhibited by the fact that the troops have now more rations and in greater variety than they have had since the first year of the war; but we know that large numbers of families of women and children, whose homes have been plundered by the enemy, have gone into the city and may be suffering.
We, therefore, desire to aid you in your efforts for their relief." ’
Col Fontaine, of the 57th Virginia regiment, in his letter, uses the following language, which we believe, is applicable to every company contributing to this noble object:
"It is just to the men to state that this act is entirely voluntary, so far as they are concerned, and was suggested by their own feelings of charity." Wm P Munfford, Chairman.
