Decoration Description:
Two maenads are dancing and playing krotala (clappers of bone or wood). Between them at their feet, stands a small leopardess with spots and teats of added red and a white stripe down the center of her face. Her frontal head is cocked as though she were peering curiously at the viewer. Vines in the background, with blobby black grape-clusters, add to the air of Dionysiac abandon. Both maenads wear chitons and himations decorated with stripes and dots of added red and dot-rosettes of added white. The maenad at left has long flowing hair and a red fillet; the one at right has her hair tied in a krobylos with a broader red hairband. On both women, the flesh areas are rendered with added white.
The reserved panel is bordered above by unframed tongues and at the sides by double rows of dots framed by paired stripes. A red stripe circles the lower body below the panel. There is added red on the edge of the mouth and the fillet above the foot.
Shape Description:
Oinochoe of Shape 1. Trefoil mouth; low, ridged handle from shoulder to rim; concave neck; tapering body; narrow, ogival foot.
