Decoration Description:
Shoulder: An egg-and-dot frieze marks the junction between neck and shoulder with the latter being decorated by an elaborate ribbed palmette and bud pattern.
Body: Hera. The goddess sits, facing right, on a high-backed throne with armrests. In her left hand she holds a scepter, ending in a lotus-bud, and in her right a phiale. She wears a long Ionic chiton with loose elbow-sleeves and a himation over her left shoulder. The chiton is broken up into many fine folds and has a dot pattern above the selvage; the folds of the himation are heavier. Her hair is folded up at the back and bound by a loosely knotted fillet, the ends of which fall down the back of the goddess. The throne has claw feet. Its back ends in a palmette on which is perched a falcon, with wings outspread. (This bird's association with Hera is rare, consisting only of this vase.) The goddess sits on a gaily decorated cushion which rests on the seat of the throne.
On the shoulder there are three palmettes. At the junction of body and shoulder and below the design, there are continuous bands of meanders broken by squares with dotted crosses.
