play, the beat is slower, and conversely. The English government in 1714 offered a reward of £ 20,000 for the discovery of a correct mode of ascertaining the longitude at sea. Harrison made four time-pieces within the years above cited, and in 1764 and following years received £ 24,000 for his improvements. (See chronometer.) The special point of novelty was the compensation balance, which was constructed to run at an equal rate under changes of temperature. Lace is a delicate kind of network composed of silk, flax, or cotton threads, twisted or plaited together. See lace. The meshes are of an hexagonal figure, in which thick threads are also interwoven to form the pattern, according to some design; and these threads, which are called gymp, form the ornament of the lace. The point-net frame was invented by Morris (England) in 1764, and is a variety of the stocking-frame, making a stitch or loop like that of a stocking, and formed by a continuance of one thread. The thread is by the machine formed into loops, a whole course at once, by pressing it down alternately over and under between a number of parallel needles. Mold-board. 1. (Plow.) A curved plate extending back of the share, for overturning the furrowslice. The mold-board, as its name indicates, was originally of wood, and was first made of iron by James Small, of Berwickshire, Scotland, about 1764. He was the first to make a complete plow of iron and steel, all but the hand-holds for the grasp of the plowman. Plows are called right or left, according to the direction in which the furrow-slice is laid. Double mold-board plows are those servoir to the paper. Mu′sic-print′ing. Music was first printed by types on which the ledger lines were cast. The font displayed all possible variations of character and position. In 1720, music was engraved on plates. Breitkopf's type, 1764, had the ledger lines on separate type. Reinhard printed the ledger lines from engraved plates, and the notes from type at a second pull. With the exception of Smeaton's improvements in details, the Newcomen engine remained in the state to which its inventor had brought it, from 1710 to 1764, about which time Watt appeared. Desaguliers' steam-engine, invented about 1716, was substantially similar to Savery's. The steam pressed directly upon the water to drive it up the eduction-pipe. Cutting off the steam caused the steam in the w and previously desponding friend, was proud of his vocation, and is described by Boswell as an iron chieftain, with 700 work-people, and the father of his tribe. The works of Boulton — afterward Boulton and Watt — were established in Birmingham, 1764. Steamengines were made there in 1774.
