The only important instance of the incorporation into Massachusetts regiments of whole companies raised out of the State was as follows: after the formation of the 2d Cavalry had been determined on, an offer was received from California to raise a company there, to be counted on the quota of Boston. A company was accordingly thus organized on Dec. 10, 1862, at San Francisco, and reached Camp Meigs at Readville, Jan. 3, 1863, under command of Capt. J. Sewell Read of San Francisco,—afterward killed in service,—the second lieutenant being also from that city and the first lieutenant from Boston. Afterwards a whole battalion was enlisted in California, reaching Boston April 16, 1863, and consisting of four companies (E, F, L and M).
