He brought the report that Porter had captured Grand Gulf and Grant had begun his victorious march on Vicksburg. Official War Records, XV, 311. Irwin, p. 144. Howard Dwight, assistant adjutant-general at the headquarters of General Banks, was shot and killed by guerillas at Bayou Boeuf, May 4, 1863, after having surrendered while riding to the front. His brother, Brig.-Gen. Wm. Dwight, Jr., was ordered by General Banks to arrest one hundred white persons in the vicinity and send them to New Orleans, to be confined as hostages for the arrest of the assassins.
