r, when the name of Medford Steps was discontinued by the railway company. Only two houses were in that section, and but one, that of Mr. Perkins on Winthrop street, near the reservoir, was occupied. A little later Mr. C. C. Stevens moved into the other, just completed on North street. His nearest neighbor was Billy Hamilton, often called the wild Irishman, but his home, as well as that of Bernard Born, the engineer at the water works, was within the limits of Somerville. At that time (May, 1870,) there were but eighteen houses west of the railway. Of these eighteen the mansion and farm houses, one house on Canal street, belonging to Edward Brooks, and two houses owned by the railway company, occupied by Rueben Willey the station agent, and Daniel Kelley, the flagman, formed a part.
