illed at the second battle of Manassas, was born in Laurens county, S. C., October 12, 1828. His father was Allen Barksdale, of Laurens county, a planter, sheriff, and member of the legislature, who died December 7, 1870. His grandfather, Nathan Barksdale, came to South Carolina from Virginia, and his mother, who died in 1866, was Nancy Downs, daughter of Joseph Downs.
