orn in King William county, Va., June 23, 1841. His father was Archie Brown, a soldier in the war of 1812, and son of Harry Brown, a soldier of the Revolution. His mother was Elizabeth E., daughter of Hon. Carver Willis, former State senator in Vinia, and was massacred by Indians, his wife, oldest son and infant child also falling victims to the treacherous foe. Captain Brown was reared in his native county, and educated at Richmond and Allegheny colleges. He also received a thorough militaeet's corps, army of Northern Virginia, with a commission as first lieutenant. The captain having fallen in battle, Lieutenant Brown took command, and held it during the remainder of the war, receiving promotion to captain. Among the important battrisoner of war at the Old Capitol and Johnson's island until July 18, 1865. From the close of hostilities until 1879 Captain Brown was engaged in farming and milling in King William county, and then removed to South Carolina, where he has had a ver
