Lamentable Accident. --Yesterday evening, about five o'clock, as one of the boats of the St. Phillip, late Star of the West, was engaged in towing another boat having in it the anchor and chain, the latter boat being overloaded, was capsized, and, being lashed to the towing boat, caused her to sink with some persons aboard, of whom five were drowned. Those drowned were Midshipman J. F. Holden, Quartermaster Martin Brown, Henry Russell and Henry Morgan, boys.--N. O. Delta, 18th.
accident occurred to members of the crew of the steamship St. Phillipe, (late Star of the West,) resulting in the loss of four valuable lives. The circumstances were these: Two boats were lashed together, one carrying a kedge anchor and the other towing the loaded boat, when, owing to the weight of the anchor and the rapidity of the current, the loaded boat capsized, carrying the other with it, which had on board seven persons, three of whom were rescued. The names of the lost we give below: Midshipman J. T. Holden, of Tennessee, lately from the Annapolis Naval School; Quartermaster Martin Brown; and Henry Russell and Henry Morgan, boys. Lieutenant Comstock, commanding the St. Phillipe, and his officers and men, did all that was possible to save the lives of the drowninging men, but not in time to save all. Dr. Ralph Darby, Assistant Surgeon, jerked off his coat, took several life-preservers, and plunged into the river to swim to their rescue.--N. O. Crescent of Saturday.
