Stealing Cattle.
--Sylvanus T. Brown, a Charles City free negro, was arraigned before the Recorder last Saturday to answer the charge of stealing two calves from Nathaniel Lawrence, on Wednesday night last.
At an early hour on Thursday morning Mr. Lawrence missed his veals, and taking the tracks of the cart in which they wer d unintentionally purchased stolen stock of a free negro, gave them up, and started in pursuit of the thief.
After riding some eight or nine miles he came up with Brown, recovered all his money but three dollars, brought him back to the city, and delivered him to the police.
Brown proved by two other free negroes that he purchaseBrown proved by two other free negroes that he purchased the calves of another negro, while on the road to Richmond, at night, and gave $50 for each of them; but neither the witnesses nor the prisoner could tell who that negro was, nor whether slave or free.
The Recorder remanded him for felony, to be examined at the next term of the Hustings Court, and committed him to jail for safe

Present: Recorder James K. Caskie, Aldermen Sanxay, Bray, Jones, Chandler, and Gary.
Sylvanus T. Brown, a free negro, charged with stealing two calves of the value of $180, was yesterday tried, found guilty, and sentenced to be sold into absolute slavery.
This is the same negro who, it is alleged, conducted the enemy in their raids through the county of Charles City.
James Jennings, charged with stealing a gold watch, valued at $500, from John W. Cosby, was arraigned for trial and sent on before Judge Lyons.
Lewis, a slave of Turpin & Yarbrough, charged with stealing a gold watch, valued at $100, from Joseph A. Brown, was tried and ordered to received twenty lashes for the offence.
William, slave of John Karr, charged with stealing sundry articles from John P. Ballard, was ordered twenty lashes.
He was also ordered twenty lashes for stealing sundry articles of wearing apparel from the Winder Hospital.
