on, another rebellion broke out on the island and lasted ten years. The revolutionists proclaimed a republic, and Spain, after spending $200,000,000 and sending over 50,000 troops, finding that she could not conquer the patriots, sent over Gen. Martinez Campos, who, by promises, induced the patriots to lay down their arms. Spain's promises were never fulfilled. In December, 1894, a bill presented in the Spanish Cortes, for the purpose of giving Cuba a larger measure of control in its own aff1896 Spain sent 80,00.0 more troops to the island. In spite of this great force, however, only one province, that of Pinar del Rio, remained in the hands of the Spanish, the other five being either wholly or partly given up to the patriots. He also took Guaimaro, Nuevitas, Santa Cruz, and Maximo Gomez. Cascorro, and fought in the battles of Palo Sico and Las Guasimas. Later he invaded Santa Clara and defeated General Jovellar. General Weyler. part of the Ten Years War and served under two captain-generals. He remained there more than two years and was sent back to Spain on account of complaints against him for alleged cruelty. It was during this campaign in Cuba that he received his title of The butcher. While there, his troops, with his knowledge, committed dreadful outrages in the province of Santiago, and especially in Camaguey. In January, 1896, he was appointed captain-general of Cuba to succeed Gen. Martinez Campos. He landed at Havana, Feb. 10, and on the same day issued several addresses.
