Stealing butter.
--A free negro, named John W. Butcher, was arrested and brought before Recorder Caskie yesterday morning on the charge of stealing four and a quarter pounds of butter, and selling it to a Mrs. Vickers. Mr. Danna appearing as counsel for John, severely catechized Mrs. V., eliciting the fact that his client went with another negro into her store to sell some butter and received from his companion, who had sold the article, 75 cents, which be immediately invested at Vickers's into Wesley.
John having entered into bonds once before, his recognizance was declared forfeited, and he was required to again give bonds in the sum of $300 for his future good conduct.
The Recorder also ordered him to receive 39 lashes.
The negro's counsel in this case doubting the right of the Recorder to require an additional bond from an individual whose first ball has not yet expired, announced his intention to test the legality of the decision before a higher Court.

Ordnance violations.
--Recorder Caskie yesterday disposed of several ordinance violators in a manner that will cause many others doing business in the city to be a little careful how they subject themselves in future to his decision.
If all offenders had such justice always meted out to them, the injurious practice would very soon be done away with and our citizens could then have the privilege of purchasing their market stuffs from first hands.
Impudent.
--Laura, slave of Michael Gentry, was arraigned yesterday, charged with being impudent to Mr. Ganst, her hirer, and wandering about the streets without permission.
The testimony of Mr. G. showing that she was a girl of had character and hard to manage, Recorder Caskie directed that she should receive 39 lashes.
Recorder Caskie presided at the Mayor's Court yesterday, in the absence of Hi Honor, Joseph Mayo.
The business of the morning was disposed of with judgment and dispatch.
