Codman, John 1814- Author; born in Dorchester, Mass., Oct. 16, 1814; educated at Amherst College; followed the sea in 1834-64, and in the Civil War was captain of the Quaker City, which carried provisions to Port Royal. His publications relating to the United States include Restoration of the American carrying trade; and the Mormon country. He died in Boston, Mass., April 6, 1900.

men. and, for the sake of adjusting the matter, Mr. Garrison proposed that five thousand dollars be given to the freedmen, and the balance ($4200) to the Standard; but when Congress, a month or two later, passed the Reconstruction Act enfranchising the freedmen, the special plea for the continuance of the Standard seemed to him no longer weighty or plausible, and he again expressed his opinion that the entire fund should go to the freedmen. The Master in Chancery to whom the matter was John Codman. referred by the Supreme Court of Massachusetts, coincided in this view, and, acting upon his recommendation, the Court directed the Trustees to so appropriate the money; but, the majority refusing to obey the mandate, they were removed by the Court, who directed Messrs. Garrison, May, and Quincy to nominate four persons in their place, and the money finally reached the treasury of the New England branch of the Freedman's Union Commission. ued at Princeton, with the reading of Don Quixote, Cecilia, and other novels; Shakspeare, Ossian, Pope, and the Spectator; and admiring Belfield in Cecilia, and the character of Sancho, Esq. Remaining at Billerica but a short time, he obtained, through the influence of Rev. Dr. Freeman and Colonel Samuel Swan, of Dorchester, a place as assistant in the private school of Rev. Henry Ware at Hingham, on a salary of £ 150, with special reference to the instruction of two lads, one of whom was John Codman, afterwards the pastor of the second church in Dorchester. An intimate friendship had grown up in college between Sumner and Joseph Story, of Marblehead, who was two years his junior in the course. A correspondence ensued. Their letters are playful, and hopeful of the future.
