Almost a fire.
--Between one and two o'clock yesterday morning an attempt was made to burn the carpenter shop of Jackson B. Crump, on the corner of Second and Leigh streets, but, fortunately, some of the neighbors, with the assistance of three firemen, discovered it in time to save the building from destruction.
As it was, a considerable portion of the rear part of the shop was consumed before the flames could be subdued.
