for their liberties. Years ago he announced his opinions; and, in the contest between Colonel Pryor and himself, he but expressed an honest conviction of his judgement in saying: "That if a Republican was elected President, we would plant the Southern colors on Pennsylvania Avenue, and fight, before the United States army, navy, and treasury, should be watched for the oppression of the South." For this he was denounced as a disunionist; but in that, like his early opposition to Stephen A. Douglas, he clung to his opinions, and his opponents were forced ultimately to concede that he was right. His valuable services in the Virginia Convention, in behalf of Southern rights, are fresh in the memory of all. Manfully did he, in the face of an overwhelming majority, battle in advocacy of Virginia's declaring herself independent of the North. Never yielding, he continued, with his little hand, to meet his opponents, fighting but the harder as success seemed more doubtful, until Old V
