ried and acquitted, after having had their vessel and personal effects taken from them by the self-sacrificing marines of Uncle Sam, (for their own benefit,) and having suffered many weary months' of imprisonment in loathsome jails. Those of the parties that it was deemed necessary to make an example of, comprised but a small moiety of those at first arrested, and thereafter detained at so heavy an expense to the Government; yet, as we have said, they were acquitted when brought before Judge Halyburton. In saying this, we are slightly in error--one unfortunate fellow, called, we believe, John Lockhart, was excepted from the general amnesty. --The Government did not choose to put him on trial on the evidence, (which was to the effect that he was found aboard the Storm King, and claimed to be a passenger,) no doubt fearing that a jury would see nothing in a man's wishing to leave so hot a place as the Guinea coast. [special Dispatch to the Richmond Dispatch.]important decision. Washington, Feb. 18. --The Supreme Court to-day (Judge Taney presiding) announced its decision in the case of the Powhatan Steamboat Company vs. the city of Petersburg. The amount involved, interest and costs, is over $20,000. The subject matter is as follows: In 1853, the steamboat Belvidere, Capt. Gifford, landed at City Point a quantity of goods, which were stowed in the warehouse at that place, (owned by the city of Petersburg as an appendage to the City Point Railroad.) They were burned up the same day they were landed. The Powhatan Steamboat Company paid the owners for the goods, and brought suit, before Judge Halyburton, in the Federal Court, at Richmond, and on trial they were non-suited. The case was then appealed to Washington, and judgment was entered for the Company, against the city of Petersburg, for the full amount claimed.
