February 27th, In honor of the Union victories at Savannah, Charleston, Wilmington, and other places, the city marshal was directed to cause the church-bells of the city to be rung for one hour at sunrise, noon, and sunset, and a salute of one hundred guns to be fired at noon on the 4th of March; and the citizens were invited to display the American ensign from their dwellings and places of business. April 11th, A vote was passed as a testimonial of respect to the late Lieutenant Thomas B. Hart, of Lynn. Eight hundred and fifty dollars were appropriated to defray the expenses incurred by the city in celebrating the recent glorious successes of the Union forces in Virginia. On the 15th the two branches of the city government met in convention, when the mayor announced in fitting words the death of President Lincoln. A prayer was made by Rev. Mr. Biddle, after which a series of appropriate resolutions were reported by a committee and unanimously adopted. June 26th, One
instance, a heavy anchor, soon made the track absolutely impassable, and the gathering mob saw the four remaining companies, without their colonel, in a manner delivered into its hands. These companies were C, D, I, L, under Captains Follansbee, Hart, Pickering and Dike; also the band, and an unarmed force from Pennsylvania, neither of which two bodies left the station. The four companies formed on President Street, numbering about two hundred and twenty men in all, under Captain Follansbee, ried it, as far as the parapet, and, holding on till after dark, its skirmishers then discovered the main fort to be abandoned, as also were Petersburg and Richmond the next day. The 61st lost 7 killed and mortally wounded, among whom was Lieut. Thomas B. Hart. Lieut. Lewis Munger (2d Mass. Cavalry) was killed a day or two previous, as was Lieut.
