to the right, go hundreds of Federal cavalry, frantic with huzzas. Can it be? Ah, yes, the stacked arms, broken ranks, furled banners and weeping soldiers, proclaim the surrender of Lee's proud army. Dr. R. J. Hicks, now of Warrenton, Virginia, who was a faithful surgeon to the 23rd, all through the war, says of the regiment: It did as much hard service, fought in as many battles, was as constant in the performance of duty as any other regiment in the army. And at Appomattox, says Dr. Hicks, it surrendered about as many men as any other regiment in the army. By the Appomattox parole lists, taken from the last volume of the Rebellion Records, it is shown that Johnston's brigade, at the surrender, numbered 463 men, rank and file. At that time, the brigade was commanded by Colonel J. W. Lea. ar Richmond, July 23d, 1862 A Meeting, composed of the soldiers from Granville county, N. C., was held this day, for the purpose of selecting suitable persons to represent the county of Granville in the ensuing Legislature of North Carolina. Capt. A. D. Peace, 23d N. C. regiment, was appointed Chairman, and Lt. N. A. Gregory, 23d N. C., and W. J. Roberts, 12th N. C., Secretaries. The Chairman appointed the following committee to report resolutions for the action of the meeting: Dr. R. J. Hicks, Lieut, J. T. Bullock, Lieut. G. M. Griffin, Lieut. Wm. F. Overton, K. W. Coghill, John S. Meadows, J. D. Knott, E. L. Flemming, and R. B. Beasley, who reported the following preamble and resolutions, which were unanimously adopted: Whereas,, we will soon have to vote for suitable persons to represent the county of Granville in the ensuing Legislature of North Carolina, and whereas it becomes our duty to select able and true men at this important crisis: Therefore, Resolved, T
